British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values

'Pupils know the school values of happiness, respect and creativity. They strive to follow these and the ‘golden rules’. Through the school values the pupils learn to understand and respect differences. This starts with the youngest children, who learn how their life is the same and/or different to others in the world.'

Wootey Infant School Intent:

Our school follows guidance from the Department for Education to promote British values so that children grow up ready for life in modern Britain.

    Implementation:

    We teach pupils to:

    • Treat people from all faiths, cultures and backgrounds with kindness and respect.

    • Understand that people may have different beliefs and opinions about what is right and wrong.

    • Know that everyone living in England follows the same laws, and that these rules help keep people safe and treated fairly.

Through everyday learning and school life, we help children develop respect, tolerance and an understanding of others.

    The Key Values are:

    • democracy
    • rule of law
    • individual liberty
    • mutual respect
    • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

    Impact:

At Wootey Infant School, children learn how to be kind, respectful and responsible members of their community. Through our teaching of British values, pupils begin to understand that everyone is important and deserves to be treated fairly.

Children learn to listen to others, share their ideas and take turns, helping them understand the importance of democracy. They also learn that rules help keep everyone safe and that we all need to follow them, helping them understand the rule of law.

Pupils are encouraged to make their own choices and develop confidence, supporting their understanding of individual liberty. They learn to treat others with kindness and care, showing mutual respect, and they begin to understand that people may have different faiths, beliefs and cultures.

By the time children leave Wootey Infant School, they are developing the skills to respect others, understand differences and feel confident as part of their community and modern Britain.
